Football Friday

Project Summary

We’re using the power of football to engage inactive youth, improve well-being, and build stronger communities in Bristol.

Football Friday, in partnership with a local youth centre, provides weekly football sessions for an average of 60 young people aged 14-19 at St. Pauls Sports Academy. Launched in 2019, the programme aims to increase physical activity, improve physical and mental well-being, and enhance social and communication skills among local youth.

The Challenge

There was a lack of youth provision on Friday evenings, especially during school holidays, leaving a gap in positive activities for young people, particularly those who were inactive or at risk of anti-social behaviour.

Many young people in Bristol were participating in less than one hour of sport per week. With limited funding available to create affordable programmes, financial barriers further limited access to existing sport opportunities for young people.

Feedback and Testimonials

Participants and educators praised the programme’s positive atmosphere, affordability, and impact on personal development and community cohesion.

Our Solution

Cognitive Paths collaborated with a local youth centre and secured funding to offer affordable football sessions every Friday evening, including during school holidays.

With funding from Wesport and Avon and Somerset Police, Football Friday sessions were offered at a minimal cost of £1. This approach promoted inclusivity and removed financial barriers to participation.

Results & Impact

Participants reported improved well-being, enhanced social skills, and the formation of new friendships across different neighbourhoods.

60

Future Outlook

The Football Friday programme was transitioned to Freestyle Bristol CIC in 2021.
